NGC 7049, has characteristics of both an elliptical (bright smooth nucleus) and a spiral galaxy (prominent dustlanes). This galaxy is an incredible 100 million light years from Earth. When the photons from this image left NCG 7049, dinosaurs still ruled our planet while South America and Africa were only hundreds of miles apart. The bright star at 1:00 o'clock is a star in our own galaxy.
