Another emergency petition from the "professional left"

The Obama administration has a real problem.  Most progressive's seem to have lost faith in him.  Four  emergency petitions in 24 hours--"Please don't give away social security, medicaid and medicare to the republican hostage takers."  It is heartbreaking that a democratic president is even thinking of giving up "the New Deal"  because oil companies, and billionaires need bigger tax breaks.  Towards the end of the week comments coming from the white house sounded remarkably similar to republicans:
“Obviously, there will be some Democrats who don’t believe we need to do entitlement reform. But there seems to be some hunger to do something of some significance,” said a Democratic official familiar with the administration’s thinking. “These moments come along at most once a decade. And it would be a real mistake if we let it pass us by.”  "hunger to do something of some significance" Of course there is a hunger by the republicans to get rid of our social safety net.  Under George Bush the republicans tried to privatize social security.  This year Paul Ryan introduced a budget that eliminated medicare replacing it with a fixed voucher and every single republican in the house voted for it.  It's not surprising that the republicans are trying to get rid of social security and medicare, what is disturbing is a democratic white house going along with them.  Social Security is completely solvent for 25 years.  With 14 million unemployed americans what is the administration doing talking about a problem in 2036?  Lets solve the 2011 unemployment problem, by a jobs program fixing our infrastructure.  If the republicans want to keep talking about the debt, lets talk about their 8 year credit card spending spree under George Bush and how their going to raise revenues to pay for it.

"We're writing because we face an emergency. There are reports that Obama is considering cuts to Social Security and Medicare benefits as a giveaway to Republicans on the debt ceiling - and the White House has yet to convincingly respond.
This is simply not acceptable. This President needs to know that he was not elected to threaten the New Deal - he was elected to help us craft a Better Deal. If we can't expect him to stand up for the most basic progressive achievements of the last 100 years, then it's going to be tougher and tougher to stand up for him.

Sign our emergency letter to President Obama today: Protect Social Security and Medicare benefits - or don't ask for grassroots help.

We don't know about you, but we think the President of the United States should not be negotiating with hostage takers. And that's why the news coming out of Washington DC has been so disturbing:
We are dealing with a political force willing to bargain away our parents' well-being so the Koch Brothers and BP get a tax cut - this is not the time to play nice with them.
Let President Obama know: You can either defend Social Security or Medicare - or you can stop asking for money and volunteer time.
The same Republicans who raised the debt ceiling 5 times (by nearly $4 Trillion) under George W. Bush in order to give HUGE tax cuts to the super-rich and mega-corporations are now telling America that we can't afford to take care of our parents and grandparents in their old age. President Obama should not be playing along.

The Other 98% of America needs Obama to take Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare #OffTheTable from the GOP.
If Obama and the White House want us to fight for them next year, they need to fight for us now. Thank you for making this movement real.
Sincerely,
The Other 98% Team: Josh Bolotsky, Andrew Boyd, Samantha Corbin, Andy Menconi, John Sellers, Ericka Taylor"
