Sally Ride shattered the glass ceiling when in June of 1983 she climbed aboard the Challenger Space Shuttle and blasted off into space becoming the first American woman in space.  Ms. Ride was a physicist, a NASA astronaut, author, teacher and an inspiration to thousands of young girls, women and men.  Ms. Ride also valued privacy in her personal life.
